Race results - Summer/Autumn 2009
In this long overdue post I'd like to catch up on reporting about the past season's race results and to show off a couple of photos.
As a result of my travelling I missed the first part of the season and began racing in January 2009. I did 4 triathlon races, 2 open water swims and a hill run.
The placements may not look too impressive at the first glance, but consider that pretty much everything I did that season was for the first time. I never took part in this kind of events before (with the exception of this event, but that was more for fun than a real race), and I am very proud that I have actually successfully completed all of these races! Some of them were very long and hard. I am also very pleased about the significant improvement over the season. I am looking forward to do even better next season.
Triathlon
The first race was the hardest. Without much preparation I went straight for the full Olympic distance. I wont talk much about the pain, I'll just say - I did it. After this one, I felt like nothing could stop me for the rest of the season. I have also constantly improved, with a little drawback during the last race. That was mainly due to the big storm that resulted in a screwed up swim: I could not see the buoys because of giant waves braking over me, which was kinda frightening. I can't wait for the next season.

Open water swimming
The Portsea swim felt easy after having completed the Olympic triathlon race a short time earlier. The Big Bay Swim was challenging - over 3km right across the Port Phillip Bay sounded quite exciting. At the end I did all right. I could have even saved a few minutes if not for the jellyfish. Before the race I thought there were only two kinds - harmless and deadly. It turns out that there also another kind: painful but not dangerous. Unfortunately, the organisers did not warn us of that (I guess locals know this anyway). When I got stung I became very worried, after all according to my assumption I was dealing with the deadly kind, since the sting clearly felt far from harmless. I stopped swimming and hung around in the water while having a conversation with a lifesaver who was watching the race from his kayak. Really, I did not have much other choice than to believe his "no worries, mate". After finishing it turned out that most competitors were all covered with stings, and my situation was not special. Next time I'll know!))

Hill running
This was a fun race. Instead of resting I had a late night before the race and I felt quite sleepy at the start. When everyone started running I just did the same. I expected a lot of pain and suffering, but suddenly I realised that I was on the last two kilometres. I went for it and after an annoying descent to the finish (running downhill is the hardest) I crossed the finish line beating the first train. Motivated by this experience I I'll be doing a half marathon this October.

Future challenges
The big Melbourne Marathon is in October and I'll be running in the half-marathon race. This should be interesting, as I am returning from Europe just a few hours before the start, so training and pre-race rest may not be easy to organise.
And in November the next triathlon season begins!
